At the end of the 20th century, this street was made entirely pedestrian and adorned with numerous monuments and sculptures, and Malaya Sadovaya became an even more popular destination for walks and meetings for both St.
Petersburg's residents and visitors. One of the street's main attractions is its fountain with a granite kugel ball spinning freely in jets of water. Bronze and cast iron sculptures of animals line the street: a stray dog named Gavryusha looms in one of the courtyards of Malaya Sadovaya, and the two cats which St. Petersburg residents have named Elisha and Vasilisa rest on the ledges of a house overlooking Nevsky Prospekt.
People throw coins on the ledges where the cats rest, hoping it will grant them their wishes. The latest "settlers" on Malaya Sadovaya Ulitsa are the photographer Karl Bulla a former resident of the street and his little bulldog. Malaya Sadovaya has long been known for its cafes and restaurants.
In the 19th century, Fyodorov's Restaurant offered a glass of vodka and a boiled pork sandwich for just 10 kopeks. At the other end of the social spectrum, the famous Eliseyev Emporium opened on the corner of Malaya Sadovaya and Nevsky Prospekt inthe flagship store for St. Petersburg's top wine merchants. It also housed a luxury restaurant and a theatre.Helpers chart for kindergarten
This eclectic building with its giant store-front windows was renamed Delicatessen No. Akimov Theatre of Comedy. The other two most notable buildings on Malaya Sadovaya flank the opposite end of the street at the junction with Italyanskaya Ulitsa.
On one side, the Palace of Ivan Shuvalov, one of the leading statesman of the reign of Empress Elizaveta Petrovna and founder of Moscow University and the Russian Academy of Arts, is a pretty baroque building by architect Savva Chevakinsky, has since housed the Museum of Hygiene.Conversion calculator cape feet to meters
Opposite, the House of Radio is a fine Russian Neoclassical building of the early 20th century, built as the Assembly of the Gentility, a club and social centre for St. Petersburg's haute bourgeoisie. Today, Malaya Sadovaya Ulitsa has Spanish and Vietnamese restaurants, a tea room, and fast-food outlets. On warm summer days and nights, musicians and artists showcase their talents on the sidewalks. Even in the depths of winter, Malaya Sadovaya is generally buzzing with activity at all hours, thanks to the fact that it is the only heated street in the city, always clear of snow, ice, or puddles.

For a long time the street was the center of the city's trade and commerce.
Here were the cheapest markets, numerous shops, and restaurants. The fact that Sadovaya Ulitsa runs parallel to the Fontanka River is no accident.
In the 18th century, palaces and estates of the nobility had their front facades facing the river, and on the side facing the street gardens and orchards were arranged. This explains the street's name Sadovaya Garden. The mansions of Anichkov, Vorontsov, Yusupov and other famous people are found here. In the s, the street was extended to the south-west to the Kolomna neighborhood thus arranging two squares - the famous Sennaya Hay Market and Intercession now Ploschad Turgeneva.
In the first half of the 19th century, according to the urban development plans of Carlo Rossi, the street was paved all the way to the Neva, past the Field of Mars and the Summer Garden. This is how modern Sadovaya Ulitsa came to be.
Sadovaya Ulitsa has long been a center of the city trade. Gostiny Dvor is located here and so too are the Sea market, flour stalls, Apraxin yard, and Nikolsky Market. Some of them still perform their trading functions to this day.
Especially popular is Sennaya Ploschad Hay Market which is called "the belly of Petersburg" as an analogy with the "belly of Paris" in France. In the 19th century, apartment houses were built and Sadovaya became a densely populated urban area. It is in these tenement houses near Sennaya Ploschad that heroes of the novels of Fyodor Dostoevsky lived.
Among the notable monuments of the 19th century are Brig guard house No. Of particular interest are the Art Nouveau style buildings constructed at the turn of 19thth centuries: Alferov shop No.
House No. Sadovaya Ulitsa has little luck with cathedrals. Both churches built here - the Assumption Church in Sennaya Ploschad and Intercession on Ploschad Turgeneva - were destroyed in the 20th century. The Soviet government also greatly altered Sennaya Ploschad. However, the historic buildings in general are well preserved on Sadovaya Ulitsa, so a walk down this street shows a taste of Petersburg the way it once was.
